PRVWSD Highlights Fall and Winter Crappie Fishing at the Reservoir

Families looking for something to do outdoors this fall and winter may want to keep their fishing gear handy. The Pearl River Valley Water Supply District is encouraging residents to spend time fishing for crappie at Ross Barnett Reservoir, sharing seasonal tips in a recent Facebook post.

The district’s message focuses on fishing as a way to spend time together, enjoy the scenery and make family memories during the cooler months. For those planning a trip, its accompanying guide offers suggestions on where to look and how cooling water can affect the fish.

According to PRVWSD, crappie move toward deeper water as temperatures drop. Anglers may find them holding along ledges, near brush piles or suspended over deeper underwater structure. Finding those features is a central part of the district’s advice for locating fish during fall and winter.

The guide identifies the Welfare Hole and Pelahatchie Bay Causeway as places to try, along with deep ledges and structure along the river channel. It also recommends daytime fishing, when crappie tend to suspend over deeper areas.

For Reservoir families, the post is a reminder that time on the water doesn’t have to end with summer. A fishing trip offers another reason to get outside together, whether catching crappie is a familiar tradition or something the kids are trying for the first time.
