Aerial Spraying Planned to Control Invasive Weeds on October 27

Pearl River Valley Water Supply District will use aerial spraying to control invasive weeds in several areas around the reservoir on Tuesday, October 27. The spraying will cover Pelahatchie Bay, the main lake body, and the river section above Highway 43.

The operation will begin in the morning and may last several hours, depending on weather and progress. Crews will target floating and submerged vegetation that has spread in the water.

Residents living within a two to three mile radius of the reservoir may notice low-flying helicopters or heavy drones during the day. The water will remain open for normal use, but officials recommend limiting direct contact with treated water for 24 hours after spraying. This includes swimming, fishing, and drawing water for irrigation.

Most residents will not need to take any action. If you live on the shoreline or directly use the reservoir water at home, avoid using it for drinking or watering gardens until Wednesday morning.

The Water Supply District will monitor the results and provide updates if further action is needed. Residents can expect temporary changes in water clarity or odor as weeds die off, but these effects are expected to be minor and short-term.
