A few sprinkles and the promise of more rain may have reservoir residents thinking about gathering around a fire pit for Halloween. But anyone planning to roast marshmallows over a backyard wood fire tonight will need to change those plans. Burn bans remain in effect on both sides of the reservoir, covering campfires, bonfires, fire pits and fire rings.
The Mississippi Forestry Commission currently lists Rankin County’s ban through November 15 and Madison County’s through November 18. Neither county’s listed expiration arrives this weekend, and residents should check for updates before planning any outdoor burning.
Rain in the forecast does not give residents permission to resume burning. Even if showers arrive, residents should wait for an official change to the restrictions rather than deciding conditions look wet enough.
Putting a fire in a backyard pit or metal ring does not make it an exception. The Forestry Commission specifically includes those fires among prohibited activities because escaping embers can ignite nearby vegetation. Burning leaves, limbs and other yard debris is also prohibited.
For families hoping to enjoy Halloween s’mores, an indoor oven or microwave offers an alternative without lighting a backyard fire. Save the wood-fired marshmallow roasting for after restrictions end.

Residents can follow the Mississippi Forestry Commission’s burn ban page for current county restrictions. Enjoy the costumes, candy and time with neighbors tonight, but leave the fire pit unlit.
